Asynchronous courses do not require simultaneous attendance with the professor and other classmates online. You do not typically have real time communication. Usually your communication comes on discussion boards or through email. It is the asynchronous courses that truly give you the freedom that many distance learning students require.

Once you have decided on what certificate or degree you want, you should choose an online institution that best fits your learning style and has a good name that people will recognize and associate with a quality education.
