Adult Education Online
What is distance learning education?
Distance learning is fast becoming the choice for continuing education for working adults. Also refered to as online college, online eductation, distance learning education, long distance education and e-learning, this way of learning allows people to get an educational degree or certificate through a “name” university or college right from their living room or bedroom, using only a high speed internet connection.
With the rise of the internet, distance learning via mail has become a thing of the past, being replaced by the faster, more full and complete internet experience that everyone is so familiar with. It is actually a better learning experience as well.. With just a desktop, internet connection and self motivation, you can earn a higher education degree without ever setting foot inside a classroom.
Advantages of College Distance Learning
The main benefit of distance learning education is the flexibility you have, especially if you already have a career, little ones at home or other various adult responsibilities. You can study at midnight after the house has gone to bed, or listen to a lecture in the morning before getting ready for your work day. Having the ability to work at your own pace is the major benefit of online education, and one of the main reasons to consider this kind of college education. Lower costs for online courses also makes distance learning more affordable than traditional colleges or universites, giving another benefit to learning online through distance learning. Lastly, the option to earn a degree or a certificate, such as the paralegal certificate online, is yet another benefit.
The Downside to Distance Learning
Being a self starter and highly motivated are two traits needed to be successful with your online education. Some students that are taking online classes complain that they miss the interaction of other students and the professor that can be found on a traditional university or college. Taking a distance learning course requires students to be able to manage their time properly, stay on task and meet your deadlines. Working on your own can be difficult for some due to the lack of interaction between the student and the teacher. This can be one of the major hurdles that you will need to overcome should you choose to engage in distance learning education.
Asynchronous or Synchronous, Which is Better?
When we discuss distance learning colleges, there are two basic types of courses offered. There are synchronous courses and there are asynchronous learning courses. In a nutshell, the difference is that with synchronous learning, you have to attend class. There are set times for instruction, and you will need to be on your computer, attending class at these set times.? Primary communication is in real time, through web cam and instant messaging. Asynchronous courses do not require simultaneous attendance with the professor and other classmates online. You do not typically have real time communication. Usually your communication comes on discussion boards or through email. It is the asynchronous courses that truly give you the freedom that many distance learning students require.
Making Your Decision
There are a great deal of distance learning colleges and schools that offer various classes and degree programs to meet many students needs. Once you have decided on what certificate or degree you want, you should choose an online institution that best fits your learning style and has a good name that people will recognize and associate with a quality education. You will also want to choose a school that is fully accredited so your degree is accepted by your future employers as well as other institutions or schools should you want to go to another institution.
With a good head on your shoulders, and a college level degree, you can enhance your resume and get hired for your chosen career or desired field of work. Whether you are trying to obtain your masters, bachelors or doctorate degree, advancing your education really has no downside.
