Criminal Justice Career Candidates Learn Their Skills Through Online School Programs
Many people grow up idolizing the law enforcement officers in their community. Making the decision to become a part of the law enforcement community at any level is a choice that requires a lot of dedication. However, earning an online degree in criminal justice to enter the criminal justice field is one of the most rewarding decisions that anyone can make, and will lead to a fulfilling career in serving and protecting the public.
The amount of higher education a student needs will vary greatly by their various career goals. Since criminal justice involves every level of law enforcement, there are many applicable career paths to follow. Students can pursue certificates, bachelor’s degrees or master’s degrees in criminal justice and become anything from a corrections officer to an FBI agent.
Students who want to work in law enforcement, private security or corrections may do well to begin with an associate’s degree at an online college. An associate’s degree requires two years to finish and helps students get acquainted with foundational work in math, science and English. After earning a bachelor’s degree, many graduates spend time working in criminal justice before they decide to return to school. A number of graduates know that the highest levels of education they can complete will afford them more opportunities when it comes to promotions and their career. Students who wish to work with the FBI, command their own police force as a police chief, or extend their knowledge as a college instructor will have to earn a master’s degree in order to do so.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects strong growth in a number of criminal justice career fields, including an 11 percent increase in employment for police and sheriff’s jobs and a 16 percent increase in correctional officers’ employment. Students who successfully graduate with any degree in criminal justice will have a number of employment opportunities at all levels of criminal justice. They do need to recognize that their salary will vary according to specialty, however.
