EFL Training In Africa
If you decide to become a teacher of English as a foreign language or EFL teacher, your skills will help people across the world and particularly in developing countries. It can help in terms of education, the economy and trade. It is also easier for us to learn about each other’s culture when we have a common language. To become an EFL teacher you need enthusiasm to teach English, a degree and an EFL training certificate.
Africa has become one of the most popular continents to travel to as an EFL teacher. French and German are two other languages spoken widely on the continent as well as the thousands of native languages. Where Britain dominated during colonial times English remains but there are several countries where little is known of English.
Rwanda has now begun a national programme of teaching in English at primary and secondary schools. They hope that children will be able to communicate with the rest of the worlds better when they become the next generation of politicians, teachers and business leaders.
Part of this move away from the presently spoken French has been put down to Francophobe feelings following the 1994 genocide. Both countries lay blame at each other’s doorstep and there has been a marked cooling in relations between France and Rwanda since.
Although this is definitely not a reason behind the switch to English touted by officials, commentators view this as a large reason. The official word is that by learning English Rwanda will be able to communicate more effectively with the rest of the world. This applies to countries including China, the US and England as well as other countries. Their neighbouring countries like Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania also speak English as their common second language.
The use of English as a common worldwide language is also used in business so that international offices can communicate with each other. EFL training is a sure way to becoming a teacher of English in a foreign country.
