The sight word list for Dolch is a list of two hundred twenty common words in English that was originally prepared by Edward William Dolch, PhD for his 1948 book “Problems in Reading”. In order to achieve fluency in English reading is that a child is able to recognize each of the words on the list, this is even more important since none of the words on the list is able to be sounded out phonetically.

Before you get started using this method you have to understand what the Dolch sight word list is and what it isn’t. So to make sure we get past that point I will get into more detail. The Dolch Sight Word List is divided into 5 specific groups an example of a level is as follows:

Primer Level

all, am, are, at, ate, be, black, brown, but, came, did, do, eat, four, get, good, have, he, into, like, must, new, no, now, on, our, out, please, pretty, ran, ride, saw, say, she, so, soon, that, there, they, this, too, under, want, was, well, went, what, white, who, will, with, yes

Whether in K-12 education, schooling at home or ESL (English as a Second Language) it is essential that students not only understand all these words, but are also able to instantly comprehend them. Teachers and educators therefore should implement activities using these words encouraging their comprehension and understanding. This is a component of the Dolch’s Lists method

A popular technique is to make use of flash cards in class. Another one, which students have a lot of fun with but also very helpful in assisting with learning of these words, is to play Dolch Sight Word Bingo. This can be done with preprinted bingo cards (this can be expensive), or create bingo cards yourself (which is cheap but time consuming), or use a software application such as Bingo Card Printer to produce the bingo cards.
