Handling The Stigma Associated With Receiving Private Tutoring

There are now more children receiving private private tutoring in the UK than ever before, yet there can still be a stigma associated with it. This kind of attitude is especially prevalent in working class and inner city areas where educational levels aren’t the best. Pupils that are victims of this kind of abuse often struggle to understand why they are targeted in this way and how they can handle the problem.

Inside a bully’s mind

The reason that many bullies target other pupils is because they are aware of their own weaknesses and try to deflect attention elsewhere. Therefore it could be that they are teasing you over your private tutoring because of their own lack of ability in a certain area. Or perhaps they are jealous that you have parents that care enough to pay for a private tutor, when their own parents show little interest in their education.

How to react

If you are just about to embark on the road of private tutoring and are worried about how your peers will react, then it could be wise to just keep it to yourself and avoid anyone finding out. If on the other hand you are already receiving tutoring and others are aware of it then the best way of dealing with any problems depends on the seriousness.

If you are victim of a small amount of teasing or name calling, then try to shrug it off or even laugh along with them. Bullies tend to soon move on if they aren’t getting the reaction that they want – which is upsetting you in some way.

The next step

If the bullying has escalated into a more serious form such as physical violence, or verbal abuse that is too much to bear then you must seek help from elsewhere. Raising the issue with a parent or teacher is the best course of action to take and in most instances will soon solve the problem.
