How to Successfully Teach a Foreign Language to Non-Native Speaking Individuals

It is sometimes pretty challenging for new teachers to know exactly how to teach their students their foreign language. This is partially because every person learns differently and it can be challenging to know the best way to make sure most students learn most of the material. Probably one of the most effective ways to educate people is to have them learn the definitions of the words first through the use of vocabulary books and by having a weekly vocabulary quiz. This way the students who learn best by memorizing the material will be able to do so and the students that learn best by visualizing can make flashcards for the words. Below are a few supplemental teaching methods for helping your students learn the foreign language:

1. Talk to the pupils in the foreign language. This method is usually best for those who have some background with the language. It would probably not be the best idea to speak in the foreign language to those who are just learning because many students will probably become frustrated if they can not understand.

2. Have everyone in the class watch video clips or full-length films in the language. This is helpful because students can then associate the actions in the film with the vocabulary they learn in class. Again, this method should be used with students who are at the intermediate to advanced level; however, it can be used with beginner students as long as the film has English subtitles.

3. Have the students do practice sentences out of a workbook. There are plenty of workbooks in the market that can aid students with their writing and listening of a foreign language through repetition. These books are good when teachers who do not have long class periods to teach the students.

4. Have the students do projects about a country where the language they are learning is the native language. For example, if the students are learning French, then it would be a advantageous for the teacher to have the students do a project on a country where they speak French. The project should be completed in French. This gives the students an occasion to translate sentences they find in English to French for the project. Also, doing a project like this helps educate the pupils about the culture of a different country.

5. It would be even better if you could arrange a “pen-pal” program where the students write or email students who live in the country where the language they are learning is spoken. This is good opportunity for students to get real-world experience with using the language and it will give them confidence in their language skills once they write the letter or email.

It is important for those educators of foreign languages to try all kinds of techniques for teaching this subject because it can be one of the most challenging for people who are attempting to learn. If you try all of these methods then your class will probably learn the new language relatively quickly because most of the different types of learning processes are covered.
