How Working From Home Influenced My Attitude To Driving And Vehicle Ownership.

When I began to work from home a couple of years ago I not surprisingly discovered a massive decrease in the amount of motoring I was doing. In fact, as much of my work involves Online jobs, I seldom need to commute and I have discovered that sometimes several days go by during which the car remains unused. Next month the car lease ends and I am giving serious thought to my transport requirements for the coming weeks whilst I continue to work from home.

The majority of car lease arrangements permit a fixed annual distance, often it is 10,000. If you do not drive 10,000 miles in the year then you still have to pay the fixed monthly lease cost and there is normally no reduction. If you Work from home full time like I do then you could find that your annual mileage is significantly less than 10,000 so a lease contract of this type is going to be costly.

For this reason I am almost certainly not going to continue to lease a car. My alternatives are to buy one for cash. However this doesn’t attract because it will use up a large sum of money. Additionally, my partner has a car which is quite adequate for social and domestic use , so I am considering not having a car at all and hiring one if and when required.

Looking at my work from home diary I estimate that in the past six months I could have needed car hire on nine individual days. Researching daily car hire prices I believe I am able to hire a suitable car for in the region of £30 per day, so my total six months motoring expense will be under £300 in total. Plus I could be extravagant and rent something grander should I choose.

So that’s now how I plan to organise my motoring for as long as I continue to work from home.
