Working and living there means you are surrounded by Italian 24/7. The passion of the way Italian is spoken was a joy. Watching a fight break out in the coffee shop and realizing that it is just a normal conversation about the quality of different coffees was tremendously liberating. Many people recommend learning as many nouns as possible first. Then start adding verbs and thus the structure of past, future and other tenses. Learn it so that the music of the language has you waving your arms around.
Try to learn from a native Italian speaker. You do not want to have some kind of bookish accent from learning Italian in a language courses. Learn Italian so that you sound like a Milanese in Sienna or a Florentine in Vienna. You want to be mistaken for an Italian from somewhere not an American!
