Learning Management System Brings New Technique to College Courseware
Colleges nationwide have begun to implement a Learning Management System into their curriculum that has revolutionized how material is being delivered to their students. Specialty Universities have been the first to break through this evolution in the education system as they offer programs that are solely for students who are pursuing degrees via distant learning. E learning courses that offer interactive curriculum such as; group projects, labs, quizzes, 3D modules, offer the same quality of material as in classroom courses.
Jim Miller, a current Internet Marketing major attending Orlando based Full Sail University, while residing on the West Coast, talks about his experience with their distant learning program. He expresses that working full time and being a full time student is not an easy task, but the ability to work his school schedule around his work schedule makes it possible for him to earn his degree while still establishing himself in the workforce. “It’s great because class is wherever you are. The convenience and flexibility of when you attend your class enables you to work your education around your career which helps to facilitate both endeavors.”
The Learning Management System has created an additional aid to help students who seek further assistance in their course work. Professors and Counselors have opened their doors, virtually, to free up their availability with a 24/7 mentorship program, to help their students or answer any questions that students may have about the concepts.Among many other benefits, students are exposed to various styles of teaching within each class, this exposes them to numerous styles and ultimately enables them to learn which style best suits them.
With every advantage there is always a disadvantage. Depending on the University or the specific Professor, students may be required to participate in group projects. As a result, group projects can cause difficulties with having to compensate for time differences, planning around work schedules, and picking up the responsibility of lesser motivated group members. Assessments of these courses are conducted on a regular basis to ensure that the curriculum layout and material is being delivered successfully as well as enjoyably for the students.
When asked how he felt the Learning Management System curriculum and teaching compared to “in classroom” material and teaching in regards to quality, Jim states, “The only difference that I have experienced is that you are not physically in the classroom. I feel the quality of the curriculum and the concepts I am being taught are held at the same standard and uphold the same quality at any other University attending an in-person course.”
Colleges who have not yet created a Learning Management System online learning program, have implemented certain e learning components into their current curriculum. Professors have started to catch on to the trend and have tried new techniques to mix up their material by hosting their classes in an “online learning” type manner via chat room or modules. People are acknowledging the ease in course delivery and are beginning to build up a fascination in how implementing a Learning Management System can provide a beneficial learning experience for their students.
