Prepare Yourself For Your Future With Online College Programs
MBA candidates know they can’t even get started until they take their GMAT exam. Standing for Graduate Management Admission Test, this exam carries considerable weight as to how good a graduate school one goes to, if one at all. Consider it the gut check one must pass before being deemed worthy of the graduate program.
One way must MBA applicants prepare for the GMAT is to take a preparatory class or two, usually online. The GMAT is divided into three key sections, all taken in one day – the Verbal, Quantitative and AWA segments. Students who want to do well on this test will take preparatory classes and drill over and over again. There are some very solid reasons for this.
While most students realize the GMAT is now on computer, there is something about the testing process many don’t know. The GMAT is run by a program called the Computer-Adaptive Structure. How this system works is the first question the test taker is presented with is weighted as an “average” one. If the taker answers the first question correctly, the test presents a tougher question as the second. If the student gets it wrong, the computer presents an “easier” one. The Structure will continue this process for the first five questions.
What the program is doing is actually determining, through a complex series of algorithms, what your true level of knowledge really is. The first five questions are actually the most important ones you will answer for that entire test. After that the program has determined the rest of your exam.
What it all boils down to is to say Student A answers the first five questions correctly, and then proceeds to do very well with the remaining questions. Then there’s Student B, who answered only three of the first five correctly, but from there got the same quantity of correct answers, Student A will end up with a better score than Student B.
If that isn’t enough, where one makes that first mistake could have an effect on the GMAT score. The earlier one gives an incorrect answer; the sooner one is dropped down to a lower level of questions. Making up for what could be just a glitch in one’s knowledge is all the harder for a person who did it at question #2 than at #5.
The best way to combat this, of course, is not only to take online preparatory courses, but an online preparatory course that includes drills that emulate the Computer-Adaptive Structure. From there, like just about everything else with the GMAT, it’s time to repeat and repeat and repeat those drills until they feel natural. Just like riding a bicycle, once you get the hang of it, the test becomes a lot easier.
While there probably are those who feel the Computer-Adaptive Structure might not be fair, the fact of the matter is that’s how the test is structured. For those who’ve been learning from courses in an online MBA program, this may come a little more naturally. Online classes preparing for the GMAT will get the student up to speed and ensure a better outcome when testing. There’s an old saying from a popular kids TV show that used to end every episode with the line “knowing is half the battle.” When one is armed with that kind of advice, one can start their online degree program that will end with their degree in business.
