Bricklaying is possibly the most established jobs within the construction industry, however, the majority of people do not realise just how varied this particular role can actually be. It is not just a case of heading out and laying a few bricks down! Bricklayers will need to work with planners and architects in order to ensure they get the desired result. Bricklayers can end up working with all types of tools and equipment. Also, it’s not only about building – bricklayers will often be called into to mend damaged walls, or even upgrade existing walls. While no formal qualifications are required to get into bricklaying, a modest level of Maths and English will be useful when planning and measuring. Entry into the bricklaying profession is generally done though apprenticeship, and you can except to make anywhere between £17,000 and £25,000 a year.
A construction operative is a person who handles the early preparations for a construction site. They will make sure that the ground is properly prepared, marking out areas to be dug out for drains and foundations. They will help ensure all of the needed materials and tools are available, and also help prepare materials such as cement and plaster. They also ensure the construction site has necessary safety barriers where necessary, erect safety signs, and help with on-site offices. Again, there aren’t any formal requirements for entry into this role, however GCSE or equivalent in English and Maths will be advantageous. Plant operator is a career which involves operating heavy equipment on construction sites. This may include machinery such as bulldozers and diggers for digging and removing soil from the construction site. They may also be required to drive cranes. For this career a drivers license is necessary. Probably earnings for this role can extend from as low as £15,000 to as high as £40,000, depending on the level of the machinery being operated.
