Talent Agencies: Some Are Schools and Some Are Business

Many young hopefuls’ visit in Seattle modeling agencies in the hope of becoming superstar cover girls. While the Seattle modeling agency could be a step in the right direction, very few young women actually get the opportunity to grace the runways of Milan or the pages of Vogue or Sports Illustrated. This does not mean, however that the agencies have nothing to offer even the plainest young women and men. Many classes are given under the auspices of personal improvement.

The aspiring models will usually attend an open call, Showing their best photos. The open calls may be at the agency location or at local hotels or malls. Though the agents are, of course, looking for the next Kate Moss, the larger portion of profits is for the required classes and photo shoots.

The models sign with the agents for a fee. This fee includes classesall geared for the professional model. Photographers established with the agency that are hired to take photos of the new clients. This cost is not usually a part of the original agreement, nor is the fee for the required professional make-up artist, or the printing and copying of the photos.

After assuming these expenses the the new aspiring model can expect to have professional photos and perhaps some runway and make-up skills. They may expect or have been lead to believe that now the agency will submit them for possible modeling jobs, shooting photos, modeling clothes for designers and even doing commercials. It is the rare girl who having been through all the classes and photo shoots is actually submitted. The girls who have the actual necessary requirements for actual modeling work are usually submitted immediately.

What reason would compel a business not to submit a girl who is able to make them large sums of money now? The young men and women who are truly noticeable are usually sent to Paris or New York to a connected agency there. There are no fees required, although the model may be required to pay for their plane ticket. Upon arrival, they are given a place to live which will be taken from the money made modeling, photographers and make-up artists who will shoot with them for free, and auditions or go-sees. Models will begin working immediately with or without experience. If they project for film, they will also be sent on commercial and even film and television auditions. No fees are paid. It is expected that the agency will make money from the twenty percent taken from the work the model gets. In return the agency using their connections will work to find the model the most lucrative career-building options.

One can find work as a model in Seattle for the beauty who decides to stay local, but again, no aspiring model will pay fees before she works. Most agencies in smaller towns may be known as beauty schools rather than modeling agencies. Then self-improvement instead of stardom will be the expectation.
