Why People May Want A Change In Career Direction In Mid Life, And The Options Available For A Fresh Start
There was a time when somebody set their sights on a particular occupation at an early stage, undertook the specified tuition for relevant exams, and then remained in that area up to retirement. Conditions have altered since then, with a lot more people making a career change in mid-life. Obviously the more advanced in years they are, the harder it may be to adjust to different ways of working, yet on the other hand, they probably possess more capital to assist in tiding them over the probable temporary fall in pay that change of direction may incur. The new area of Internet business has provided a new class of online jobs, that those from many previous occupations can train up in quickly, especially because they enable people to work from home.
There exist a variety of motives for people to take a change of career. There are cases in which someone may have been pressured by their family into taking up a particular occupation, for instance, a father might expect his son to take up his own profession. It may not, though, be something they really enjoy doing, and eventually, they may choose to train in the area they really desire to pursue. There are others who might accept a safe day job, and indulge their real passion – in antiques or acting, for instance – in their spare time. If they achieve success, they are free to leave their less glamorous occupation.
A more familiar motive these days, is that people discover that in reality they don’t enjoy their selected occupation. The reality isn’t what they expected. For instance, I have met a lot of ex-schoolteachers who made the decision to change to another occupation due to the lack of discipline in today’s classrooms.
There is also the small matter of remuneration. There are some jobs that are interesting to work in, for instance in scientific research, but they don’t carry a very good salary and the positions are often short-term or temporary. For someone who is required to support a family, the lure of a better paid job in a less interesting area is easy to understand. As someone has described the situation to myself, work fulfilment is great in theory, but it doesn’t help if you are trying to bring up a family on a minimal wage and your kids are short of food and clothing. At the other extreme, there are those who leave well-paid careers to enable them to take up a less remunerative yet more satisfying alternative, or to allow them to work from home so they can spend more time with their family.
An all too frequent and unanticipated cause of a job change is losing your job. People who are laid off may take the chance to employ their redundancy package to set up their own business. In some cases it may be doing the same as what they were doing all their lives, on other occasions it can be a totally new line of work. For instance, an acquaintance, laid off from an administrative position, set up an antiques centre.
Due to the growing popularity of the World Wide Web, there is a huge new range of Internet business opportunities that can be taken up by those looking for a change of scene or who have been made redundant. These may be described as ‘online jobs’ since they enable people to work from home and connect to customers by way of the Web. Some without previous IT experience may be apprehensive that they lack the IT skills to take up such openings, but it is possible to get training and many are surprised at how easily they pick up the new skills. Whether people are dissatisfied in their present line of work and want a career change, or find themselves in a declining industry and are hoping for new career paths, the online jobs to be found in Internet business offer people a genuine chance to start over.
