Work Environment, Social and Traveling Benefits of Being Bilingual
Learning a second language can be a huge benefit in modern day society. Typically, most people will learn new languages in a school environment. For some people studying a new language through vocabulary quizzes , translation of English words and memorization may be the easiest way to develop their knowledge base of that language. For others, real life exposure proves to be most beneficial. In professional environments, a second language proves useful when companies have expanded on a global level. Most consumer goods sold in grocery and convenient stores have multi-languages on their packaging. Being able to understand a second language is extremely beneficial when traveling. It helps travelers with directions, currency substitutions and general conversation with local people. Speaking with local people of countries makes travelers feel more connected to where they are visiting, as well. It allows them to read the street signs, menus at restaurants and packages in stores. It also lets them truly hear how native people communicate with each other. This type of exposure is key to understanding the culture and everyday living within a community.
While these facts regarding language knowledge may seem like common sense, it’s important to remember that people of most nations around the world learn two languages starting at a very young age. The majority of countries have citizens who are knowledgeable in two or three languages . In order for the United States to remain the strongest country in the world, its citizens will have to be able to relate and compete on a global level. Being bilingual or trilingual is key to this success. Whether it’s shopping in a store, visiting with a neighbor, ordering at a restaurant or traveling to another country, learning more languages will help improve communication.
