Environmental policy and management involves exploring the development and maintenance of long-term natural resource use and environmental quality. How policies are formulated and implemented and what their impact will have on society is the basis of this field of study.

Spurring all this is President Obama’s desire for a green economy. It has created a number of new corporations hoping to exploit this sustainable resource movement. These people need their advocates the same way the public needs those who can distinguish the plans that will work from those that don’t. There are also those who want to know the best way to get such things as carbon credits and avoid carbon taxes, among many other things. These are all under the policy manager’s domain.

Young students interested in entering the field should have a fairly wide grounding in business, environmental and social sciences. This occupation requires some aptitude in all these areas. Considering this job also involves a lot of interaction with people, strong oral and written communications skills are a must.

In other words, environmental policy is considered an interdisciplinary field. When considering college, one should actually sit down and talk with various schools regarding your 4-year degree. Some offer curriculum that puts more emphasis on environmental sciences, others approach it from the economic end. It might even be a good idea to look at schools offering post-graduate degrees to see what they look for. No matter what, you should play off whatever you consider your primary strength, and then fill in the gaps.

As it happens, there are a number of schools that do offer MS degrees in the subject. It is advisable to go for one of these degrees to balance one’s education in the field. As it happens, the occupation is considered a STEM profession, so it is open to financial assistance beyond the standard Pell, SEOG and state grants.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics states that environmental consultants earn a median salary of $899 per week, while governmental agency managers earn a median annual salary of $65,570. It also predicts there will be keen competition for positions within the environmental industry into the next decade. However, as more emphasis is placed on environmental awareness and conservation, the Bureau projects new positions will also be created.
